Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I was raised in Germany and moved back to the states in 1982. I live in Portland, Oregon, after more than two decades in Austin, Texas. I live with my husband Michael and two dogs Max and Copper. I adjusted to the rainy weather by writing a novel that combines my love of detective mysteries and the idea that parallel worlds interact with ours.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I can’t remember a time when I didn’t have a book in my hand. I use to read under the covers with a flashlight. I just couldn’t stop reading.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
I really enjoy Jodi Picoult. I love a good mystery but also enjoy reading about opportunities for growth and spiritual development.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
I wrote a paranormal detective novel. The main character is a Homicide Detective that has a failed suicide attempt. She was revived by the paramedics after being dead for a few minutes. She temporarily crossed over to the spirit would and as she returns to her body, she collides with a parallel universe. The door to the spirit world remains open after her return and she is able to communicate with spirits that have passed. As she learns to navigate the waters of being a medium, she finds that she is also able to see through dimensions and can connect with the parallel world she collided with. She receives help on her current cold case from her parallel world counterpart who she calls P-Kate for parallel Kate.

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I live in the California Bay Area where you’re surrounded by creative, progressive people. It took me a little while to get here from the Philippines, Hawaii, Illinois and then relatively conservative Orange County in SoCal. I’ve also traveled a lot and spent months at a time in Paris. I’m multicultural and have been exposed to various cultural traditions.

And no, I have no pets because my husband is allergic to animal hair, but I grew up with dogs, a goat or two and some chickens.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I got mired in words rather early in my life. What else would you do if you had three brothers who balked at taking you to catch tadpoles or ride a water buffalo? Me? I read and drew; then, I wrote. I love words. Beautiful seductive prose. My previous lives as student and mental health researcher/program developer required much writing, but of the academic sort. I started writing short stories when I was 13, now lost in the many moves I’ve made. I’m a latecomer to novels, though — my first one was published only five years ago.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
I have eclectic tastes though my all time favorites are Jane Austen and Dostoevsky — two very different writers I’ve reread. My current fascination includes Anthony Doerr, Chitra Divakaruni, and stories set in other cultures or from the point of view of “the Other.” I also enjoy reading art books. Every great writer or book I’ve read inspires me in some ways.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
My latest book, Brief Encounters with Solitary Souls, is a collection of five short stories set in various locales — Paris, Honolulu, three California cities. All are tied together by this Eugene O’Neill quote: “Life is for each man a solitary cell whose walls are mirrors.”

Confronting personal crisis, each character realizes she (or he) is all alone even amidst a social milieu; but it’s then that she sees herself clearly. It’s an insightful turning-point moment that propels her forward.

I was born in Trinidad,Colorado and grew up in Denver. I am a graduate of Metropolitan StateUniversity of Denver with a degree in communications and a minor in journalism.I have been lucky enough to work in my field all my professional life. I have been an award-winning journalist since 1989, working at newspapers in Denver,Seattle and Albuquerque.
I began my journalism career in 1989 working for The RatonRange, a small newspaper in northern New Mexico. During my three-year stay,I earned more than a dozen writing awards, including the Guy Radar Award, whichthen recognized best medical reporting in the state. I won the award for chronicling a man’s battle with breast cancer.
I returned to Denver in1992, to work for a group of community weekly newspapers covering the westside. I worked in the Mile High City until 1997, when I landed a job with a newspaper in Washington State. I moved to Bainbridge Island, where I lived and worked for two newspapers until 2004. I returned to the Southwest in 2004 as managing editor for the Rio RanchoObserver, covering Rio Rancho, the third largest city in New Mexico. I worked for The Observer and lived inAlbuquerque through September 2007. I earned more than a dozen writing award while leading the editorial team at TheObserver, including a “Public Service” award from the New Mexico PressAssociation. The series of articles highlighted the poor post office situation inRio Rancho. The International Society of WeeklyNewspaper Editors (ISWNE) also recognized me in 2005 and 2006 for excellence in editorial writing.
I returned to Denver in 2007 to work for the same community weekly newspapers covering Denver’s westside–this time as editor. I left those papers in 2008. In addition to being a Kindle Author, I currently write for the O&P EDGE magazine, a niche healthcare publication in Northglenn, Colorado.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I’ve always enjoyed reading for as long as I can remember, I’ve loved to read and write. I wrote my first thing when I was in the seventh grade, a poem about the rain.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
I’ve always enjoyed reading books by Elizabeth Berg. When it comes to dialogue, no one writes it better than she does. I like reading different genres, but mysteries and contemporary fiction are my favorites. The book that inspired me to start writing was actually the movie first and then I read the book: Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
I have a mystery series featuring reporter Samantha Church, and have three books already in that series: The Friday Edition, Revenge is Sweet and Dead Wrong, respectively.
My newest is Last Things and is an independent book from my mystery series in the contemporary and women’s fiction genre.
